Chapter 2 : Delving : Part 3

Vogh had already cut the tail off the rat she had killed and was about to take one off the last one Talin killed when the call came to her.  Talin get that tail and come over, I think I have something for this new group.

Vogh moved over to where Chule called and looked down the tunnel.  She saw the forms and fell into casting and pointed to the area centered on the bigger rat.  A flickering red fire bursts where she pointed. Creatures in the area are outlined in the flame, some more intensely than others. Cast heartfire
Fort save DC16 for half damage

21:42, Today: Vogh rolled 2 using 1d4.  heartfire.

All four rat things light up in the darkness, illuminating the disgusting trash and detritus littering the entire area. They all three jump and yelp at the burning pain as they attempt to slap out the magical flames.

Otule and Sam move down their corridor to prevent the group getting flanked.

Chule and Jule charge forward at the ratlings and pony rat.

Chule nearly trips as his foot hits a wire crossing the narrow opening into the next cavern with their foes. An arrow streaks out from the wall and thuds into his torch arm. He hollers in pain then swings his sword into the ratman in front of the big beast. The small thing is neatly cut in half from shoulder to hip as Otule corrects his swing to take on the big rat.

Jule closes with a side ratling and his sword stops at the things spine, but he tosses it aside without a concern.

[Private to GM: 15:06, Today: Secret Roll: DM, for the NPC Chule, rolled 23 using 1d20+6.  Fort Save.
15:04, Today: Secret Roll: DM rolled 19,8 using 1d20+12,1d8.  Tripwire Trap.

The remaining rating and the pony-rat both turn and flee into the cavern behind.

[Private to GM: They both jump into the Cesspool in area 7, extinguishing the flames.]

Round 3

Bards are up.

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
Vogh asks Jule whether they should follow or stick to stalking the rats.  She has an opinion about it and says, I think we should just collect the tails we have and continue at a steady pace.  We may even see the rats dead further down as the fire keeps burning for 30 seconds anyways.  Besides they are probably trying to lure us into a bigger ambush.

===========================================================
Talin
———————————————————–
Talin grabs up the tail and makes his way over to Vogh just as the rats are running away.

They sure don’t like being attacked do they, Talin says with a laugh as he holds up 2 tails.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
As they are discussing Otule and Sam return explaining that the area up ahead of the tunnel they followed was empty, except more trash, but the ceiling started getting much lower. It also seems the area beyond has been flooded or is retaining water. It smells terrible and the lower ceiling is going to make it hard to fight.

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
Well, lets get these tails, Vogh said just as Otule and Sam returned.

Seems like we have one direction then to go and that is straight.  We follow the large rat.  Is that your estimation Jule?

===========================================================
Jule
———————————————————–
In reply to Vogh (msg # 36):

“I suppose so. Not liking if this leads to the same lower ceiling though. Tighten up and keep your torches close.”

The group moved forward cautiously. Talin took the rear guard watching for any more sneakers. The ceiling did start to slop down toward the back ground into a large chamber.

The largest chamber in the nest so far had a low ceiling, about four feet high. Sopping wet refuse and waste fill the center part of the chamber with disgusting, stagnant waste water.

Rivulets of sewer water run into the middle of the room, and a few leaks in the ceiling drip down into the befouled water as well. This has created a long, narrow, and smelly cesspool that overflows a three-foot depression in the chamber’s floor.

Trash floats on top of the water in heaps and piles. Some islands of soaked garbage have piled up and no longer move about.

Clearly the giant rat and the smaller darling went into this pool.

The groups torch light shows the tunnel Otule and Sam followed joins this room as well. Additionally there are three more tunnels branching off this central pool.

===========================================================
Talin
———————————————————–
Talin nearly gagged on the smell. Holding his forearm against his nose and mouth muffles his voice, “This is disgusting. That’s peoples’ waste. Their … Gross… And we’re going to have to fight all stooped over while standing in… Waste…” His throat lurched again as he finished his statement in a gag.

This message had punctuation tweaked by the GM at 08:08, Sat 10 June 2017.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
It was clear there was some movement in the cistern, but difficult to tell if the water was just moving, or if there were rats waiting for them…

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
Vogh wasn’t sure about going into the pool after the big rat and the other one.  She could swim some, but in a pool and without all this gear.  She looked further on at the other tunnels and noticed that they were much like the one they were in before and a little higher than this chamber.

I think we should just press on.  You can poke your weapons inside the water if you want just in case the water is shallow enough to hit anything that may be waiting, but we should stay away from the sides I am thinking.

===========================================================
Talin
———————————————————–
“Are you sure? I’m not convinced the gold gained is worth ruining all our gear. The cleaning bill alone to remove kaka from everything might nullify our earnings… And gods forbid one of us goes under this filth. Every manner of human waste is present in there. You want that in your boots and mouth?!” Talin stopped a gag but his throat definitely caught.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
It’s always funny to me when a dm argues with himself but I just saw this and had to do it. haha. Give you some RP options there to proceed. 🙂

“What the hells kind of pixie are you? Are you a man or a delicate flower?!” Juel chided Talin’s objections. “If a gold coin lay in a pile of horse kaka would you not get your hand dirty to retrieve it?!”

“A man I am, and one who understands filth and avoids it. Some other men may prefer to wade into the waste of others, more akin to the porcine than the human…” Juel’s face certainly screwed up at that litany, and before he could respond Talin continued the verbal sparing. “Does not a flower grow and prosper from the nutrients of compost, but a flower I am not! Nay, surely a brute as yourself can even understand the difference between soiling one’s fingers and submerging one’s entire self in the same waste. Would such a simpleton also dive into a liquid cesspool of the same horse leavings uncertain whether a gold coin lay at the bottom?”

Talin stepped back from Juel and the others as he finished the repartee. He kept his sword down, but pointed between them in case the man attacked.

Juel’s face reflected the strain his mind was under trying to unravel all the much smarter man just spouted.

“What?! Brute?! Simple?! I’ll show you!” The big man raised his sword toward Talin but stopped short as he realized the man was ready for him. He scowled and snarled like a dog.

“We’re going to continue. Right boys?! If you don’t follow just leave those tails and be on your way…”

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
Vogh was about to say something to Talin and his question, when Juel piped in with the pixie comment.  Vogh couldn’t help, but laugh a little for she knew better about Talin.  He certainly wasn’t a pixie, but the men here so far as he could tell were brutes.

Before things got out of control Vogh said, Talin remember your basics in your arcane studies?  One of the easy spells to clean yourself if you got dirty while screwing up a spell.  Let us not worry about it and continue on.

===========================================================
Talin
———————————————————–
“Of course. The simple prestidigitation spell.” He tossed his torch into the air, snapped his fingers and caught the handle all in one motion. Three small lights appeared with his snap and floated around his wrist.

“That doesn’t mean I want kaka in my mouth. Such a simple spell is not going to heal is of disease. Not to mention beautiful, you have an open cut. If you’re adamant to proceed then let’s heal that at least.”

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
Vogh had all but forgotten about the open wound she incurred at the hands of the rat blade.  For all she knew she had already been infected with something.  Yes, you are right.  Before we move further is anyone else injured?

If no one else was injured she used one of her lower level spells to heal herself, and smiled at her concerned boyfriend whom was just too adorable with the lights dancing about him.

Juel go ahead and continue we will be right behind you.

How do you handle out of combat healing?  Like me and say it is maxed cause we are able to take the time to do it correctly?

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
My understanding is you always have to roll dice for healing.

No one else had been injured in their first interactions with the ratmen.

Juel grumbled something about them not being behind them at all, then gestured for Otule to move forward first. The rogue adjusted his face hankerchief and ducked down.

Round 4

Round 6

All four of the men had stooped and entered into the cistern. The water did not come up past their waist but bent over puts ones face close to the disgusting mess.

Everyone has a -2 penalty on attacks, Dexterity- and Strength-related checks, and Reflex saves upon anyone who does not succeed at a Balance check (DC 15) each round here. Characters who fail the Balance check while attempting to move during a round fall prone.

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
This isn’t going to be any good every round check????  ugh

21:16, Today: Vogh rolled 12 using 1d8+6.  cure light wound.
21:11, Today: Talin rolled 16 using 1d20+3.  balance check w/penalty.
21:11, Today: Vogh rolled 26 using 1d20+6.  balance check w/penalty.

Vogh and Talin follow the men into the cistern being careful of where to step so as not to fall.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
In reply to Vogh (msg # 47):

yep! 🙂

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
The group made their way into the pool and tried to make the shortest way to one of the exit tunnels.

Raising out of the water the big rat confronts the front fighters immediately.

More ratlings rise up from hiding places in the water was well. Heaps of floating trash break apart to reveal rats. Then, the two biggest ratmen they had seen yet stand in two of the tunnels. They gesture and shriek immediately followed by two rat swarms skittering across the ceiling toward the six fighters stooped over uncomfortably standing in garbage and waste.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
Both Otule and Juel hold their footing but Sam and Chule go down when trying to adjust to face the multiple threats.

They immediately stand back up spitting and gagging. Sam throws up, adding his vomit to the already disgusting mix.

Vogh and Talin both expertly keep their footing.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
The ratlings close ranks around the group.

The giant rat attacks first as the rest swarm around all 6 trying to double up two to an invader.

None of the ratlings attack while the two bigger ratmen slip into the muck with swords ready and the rat swarms quickly closing the distance.

All but four of the small things connect with the humans. Everyone takes cuts from the small swords as their maneuverability is greatly hampered by the low ceiling. The giant rat bites into Juel’s torch arm. He yells back at the thing as he retaliates.

I’ll update with specific damage asap. go ahead and post for both your people. two ratlings each are on you. A semi circle of the things surround the group. only the way back is open but closing fast

Round 7

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
Vogh sees the door closing on them quick and decides it would be better to fight outside the water than inside so she motions for Talin to follow her out of the muck and onto dry land.

Not sure if I can attack along the way or not.  Vogh will begin to sing though and give her allies the bonus to hit again of +5 and damage +5.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
In reply to Vogh (msg # 52):

you each have two combatants on you, so you can attack then do one movement which should get you out. Remember the -2 to attack.

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
Vogh makes it to the side and as she does she swings her blade at one of the rats near her.

23:05, Today: Vogh rolled 21,19 using d20+13,d6+14.  attack the rat.

===========================================================
Talin
———————————————————–
Talin gets out of the water about the same time as Vogh and as he does he steps to a rat, but the thing is just too quick for him to score a hit.

23:07, Today: Talin rolled 12,15 using d20+11,d8+11.  attack Rat.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
Vogh decapitates another one of the little vermin.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
Every one of the four humans drops a rat even in the awkward fighting stance as they move back like Vogh and Talin did, exiting the cistern.

Bad Guys 9

The two rat swarms ran across the ceiling and jumped down to surround the humans, biting and scratching in a roiling mass of rat bodies.

NPC Rat Swarm, rolled 8 using 2d6 with rolls of 2,6.  O,S,T,V,C,J.

Juel takes the first bites with Sam taking more around his ankles.

[Private to GM: Sam is now diseased.]

Both of the biggest ratmen take shots with crossbows but the quarrels shoot around the humans and clatter into the stone behind.

The giant rat snaps his jaws forward at Juel who parries the nasty teeth with his sword and raises to strike back. Juel swipes a backhanded swing at one of the little ratlings rushing past him (AOO) but the little thing is too quick for him.

The small ratlings with their swords swiped at everyone in the line behind Juel. The rats swarming beneath their feet seemed to be no hindrance to their movement.

Otule took a nasty cut on his torch arm that immediately welled with blood. (3 points)

Sam took two hits from the small swords (4+5=9 points).

Vogh, Talin and Chule all escaped further harm, dancing between scurrying rats and parrying the little ratmen’s swords.

===========================================================
Narrator

Top of Round 8

I’m going to go ahead and act for Otule and Juel

Otule swings wildly down at the swarm of rats around him, swishing both his torch and his dagger. Unfortunately both proved ineffective against the swarm. When the ratling connected solidly with him, he decided to take a couple steps back to increase the distance between he and the group. He turned his head as his ears perked up then shouted out, “I think we’re about to be flanked!”

Juel had more luck against his giant quarry. As he smacked the snapping maw aside then backhanded to attack one of the ratlings the big beast thought him defenseless but found out the opposite was true. Juel completed the backhand and allowed the rat to slam into the full length of his sword. The steel bit deep into the roof of the rats mouth spurting blood as it screamed. (13 damage)

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
Vogh saw the swarm and she had only experienced battling one just ones and it was a pain.  They were difficult to kill, but needed to be taken care of or they could easily overwhelm a foe.

She swung her sword and it picked up the song she had started, she once again changed the tune to be more chaotic and full of power (Dragon fire inspiration add 5d6 fire damage)

Her blade swung towards the swarm hoping to take them out quickly.

19:18, Today: Vogh rolled 24,15,21 using d20+15,d6+14,5d6.  ratatat tat.

===========================================================
Talin
———————————————————–
Talin was glad the swarm wasn’t going for him as he fought off the ratlings in front of him.  He felt the power from Vogh as it welled inside him and down to his sword arm.  He too swung at the other swarm seeing Vogh attack the other one.

Hold the line, we are getting rid of the swarm!  He called to the men.
19:21, Today: Talin rolled 28,18,24 using d20+13,d8+11,5d6.  attack swarm.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
Both of the swarms let out shrieks of pain as the blades bite into their numbers then the flames scorch across the entire roiling mass of bodies. The air filled with the most awful acrid smell of burned garbage and hair.

As the troop fought and shifted they had to watch their footing as burned little rat bodies crunched under their feet. (Balance check DC 10 moving through those 2 squares)

Sam and Chule quickly took the heads off two more ratlings who fell lifeless to the ground.

The sound of tiny pounding feet filled the chamber and was followed by Otule yelling out a warning.

At least a dozen more of the little bastards came rushing in from behind as the two big rat beasts closed with the group.

Otule quickly is nearly surrounded. His blade worked feverishly parrying their swords with only one getting through in the flurry. (4 damage)

The rest of the group becomes hard pressed and only their skill with the blade, and their fine armor saved them from dying immediately under the rush.

Chule takes one hit (2 points) as does Talin (3 points) then Sam blocks a thrust only to take a cut across his knuckles for his effort (2 points).

Both of the much larger ratmen, and the giant rat focus on the big Juel. He managed to smack aside another bite from the rat and parried one longsword with his torch handle but the ratman on his right slipped through his defenses and drew blood on his torso (6 points).

Top of Round 8

===========================================================
Talin
———————————————————–
Calling out to the others, Kill the ones behind Juel, they have him flanked.  He then swung his sword into one of the ratlings.

20:42, Today: Talin rolled 25,17,21 using d20+15,d8+11,5d6.  swing and hit.

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
Heading his words, Vogh slashes at the ratlings behind Juel to thin them out some.

20:44, Today: Vogh rolled 28,16,16 using d20+17,d6+14,5d6.  ratatouie.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
Vogh and Talin found the little beasts incredibly easy to kill, there were just so many of them!

Juel’s sword bit deep into the rat in front of him, spilling blood and ichor onto the already disgusting floor. Flames alit all over the big beast and it thrashed angrily at the flames and the man. (8+13 points)

Chule and Sam struggle in their swings with so many combatants around them. But all felt the powerful benefit of the bards’ singing and with their next swings felt confidence flow through them and each took down a ratling.

Otule expertly dove through an opening in two of the things fighting him and took one ratling behind Vogh in the kidney, dropping it immediately.

14:10, Today: Secret Roll: DM rolled 27 using 1d20+7 with rolls of 20.  Tumble.

The two big ratmen and the burning giant rat all got pieces of Juel. (3+7+5 = 15 points) His wounds were taking a toll, as he was bleeding from several places.

[Private to GM: Juel is diseased.]

The ratlings Otule rolled through followed him and the rest fought for their very lives.

The humans all fought with equal ferocity, feeling the walls of rat close around them cutting off every escape.

Chule took another hit (4 points) as did Sam (5 points)

===========================================================
Talin
———————————————————–
Top of Round 9

Not caring about the small ratlings behind him, Talin concentrates now on the large rat that is flanking Juel.  He could see all the wounds on Juel and wondered how the big man was standing still.  He tells Vogh, Get the other big ugly there.  They are killing Juel!  He then swings his blade with all his strength.

21:42, Today: Talin rolled 22,15,10 using d20+13,d6+14,5d6.  big rat.

===========================================================
Vogh
———————————————————–
Vogh swung her attack further towards the big rat, but the blood streaked ground had her a little unstable and her attack wasn’t as strong as she wanted.

21:45, Today: Vogh rolled 17,20,19 using d20+15,d6+14,5d6.  Other big rat.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
Round 9 Cont.

Otule shifted again, putting his back against the stone wall as he stabbed into the back of a ratling attacking Chule. Another ratling bites the dust.

Juel took a bit of a step back, ending almost back to back with Talin and Vogh. A final swing opened the giant rats throat causing it to collapse in a wheeze.

Sam and Chule, emboldened by the excellent passion of the bards, critically ended two ratlings and carried their attacks into the next in line. Sam attacked yet another ratling and Chule moved to defend his brother.

Sam dropped a second ratling in the line. Chule felt a surge of fury as his sword bit into one big ratman attacking his brother toppling the thing to the floor, barely still breathing.

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
Round 9 Final BG’s

The ratlings close around the group in a fury, slashing and attacking with all their might.

Talin and Sam both took hits (3 and 2 points)

The big ratman stepped and tried to cleave Juel, cutting into him. (2 points)

Otule 18
Jule 14
Vogh 13
Chule 13
Sam 12
Bad Guys 9

===========================================================
Narrator
———————————————————–
The bard’s inspiration had all four men feeling larger than life.

Jule cleaved the final big ratman in half with a yell, its torso falling in a wet thunk against the prostrate and dead huge rat body then sliding to the floor while its lower half toppled.

Chule took out another ratling then followed through with his overhead chop to make sure the downed ratman didn’t stand again.

Otule slit a throat. Sam sliced his sword through one ratling then took down a second.

Only three stood in Vogh and Talin’s way, which they quickly dispatched two. The third tried to run but they would have none of that. Talin took two long strides and cut the ratling in half.

The floor was slick with blood and gore mixed with the garbage and filth. Almost two dozen rodent carcass littered the ground in this room alone.

No combatants left alive

24 ratling tails, 2 big ratmen tails and one giant rat tail bring their kill total to 27. Multiplied by 3 gold each they had already made 81 gold without any casualties.

Otule spoke up as they were counting, “I’m pretty sure a few watched in the doorway but ran away. This place is obviously much bigger. Do we continue or cut and run?”
